Exclusive Interview with Eric Wood from Bastard Noise

Bow before The Skull

Zann: In the last few years there has been some sort of powerviolence revival, what do you think about it? Have you heard any new bands (besides The Endless Blockade, of course) that you think are worth recommending?

Eric: These bands are NOT power violence - What do I personally think about it? It is UNMEMORABLE to say the least - I am sure MATT DOMINO of INFEST/NEANDERTHAL MANPIG and now LOW THREAT PROFILE (who made up the term which was actually "WEST COAST POWER VIOLENCE" meaning the family of bands that were california based between the years 1989-1997 especially) would also agree. I have heard alot of great bands and some I would recommend but they are NOT power violence. These bands really need to start their own sub-genre like DOMINO and I did with NEANDERTHAL and stop being imitators - BE INNOVATORS !!!!

Zann: Many bands have inherited the powerviolence legacy of Man is the Bastard nowadays, even though very few retain the experimental aspects of it. Do you feel it is still representative of the style you created in the 90’s?

Eric: Absolutely not. But I can tell you that I believe in my heart that BARNES (original guitarist and "noise" member of M.I.T.B.) has been attempted to be imitated by ALOT of "others" but NO ONE has the flair of BARNES our "skull brother". All of BARNES equipment, whether it be guitars, amplifiers, tube oscillators, hot-rodded HAMMOND B3 tube organs or his very rare EBP TRIGGERING SYSTEM are all hand built and real prototypes that will NEVER be imitated. He NEVER used store bought gear - EVER !!!! That is a indication of a true INNOVATOR !!!! No one today sounds like him. BARNES really gave MAN IS THE BASTARD and BASTARD NOISE (the experimental years) personality and real underground spirit !!! He is still our brother today, making repairs wen we need them and lending an experienced ear to Aimee (PROGERIA) our new member who is running the original ROARAFC tube oscillators and doing additional vocals. BARNES is such a priceless friend to us.

Zann: In your opinion what is the most distinctive characteristic that differentiates Bastard Noise from other similar bands in the noise or powerviolence genre?

Eric: No guitar is used which is pretty obvious but also the history CONNELL and I have and definitely all of our (including new member Aimee) listening tastes which are anything but only h.c./grind, etc. Who we are as people reflects how we will compose tracks/lyrics and perform them "live". I mean just listen to "A CULTURE OF MONSTERS" - it DOES NOT sound like anyone else out there in our humble opinions.

Eric Wood, derritiendo cerebros

Zann: What motivated to incorporate two drummers to the new lineup of Bastard Noise?

Eric: We considered two drummer briefly back in late 2009 but this was NEVER executed. Not even in a rehearsal. DANNY WALKER is listed as "skull" because he is a real talent and cares about us all as friends. He assisted BASTARD NOISE greatly both in the studio and on our 2009 tour of JAPAN. He will always be kept close to our family but it is NOT in the line-up right now. CONNELL is my old school brother and this is THE line-up for our band. So to recap my response, we have never incorporated two drummers in BASTARD NOISE.

Zann: Many people compare the last Bastard Noise record to the classic sound of Man Is The Bastard, but to me it sounds more akin to what you've done in Cyclops, a more progressive approach. Do you agree with this?

Eric: I agree with this partially. I believe it is a "fusion" of the two units truly (CYCLOPS and MAN IS THE BASTARD) - Nonetheless I am grateful for such comparisons when they are positive ! We have great supporters and so did M.I.T.B. !!!!!! They are called "skull servants" !

Zann: What drove you into electronic manipulation and the creation of your own instruments from broken pieces of electronics and home-made circuits?

Eric: I never did this "building". As I mentioned earlier, this was ALL BARNES (and then NELSON later on when he joined M.I.T.B. for two years from 1993-1995) BARNES had the original ROARAFC tube oscillators way before I ever met him. His interest was "spawned" by him being left at his grandfathers t.v. repair shop when he was very young. He was always a "deconstruct to construct" human. He is truly an amazing mentor and taught NELSON alot too in the process of both units existing.

Zann: What aspects or possibilities of the analog electronics experimentation attracts you the most to use in your music?

Eric: When it compliments the music with real harmony or creates an "alien" or "martian" soundscape in calm areas of the material. Those ROARAFC boxes take IMMENSE time to learn. We are happy to say Aimee is learning so fast, it is incredible ! Musical noise is truly where it is at in the "big picture".

Zann: What was the first instrument you created when you started to work with Henry Barnes to build custom made electronic instruments? Can you describe it? Do you remember the feeling you played it for the first time in a live show?

Eric: As I said, ALL the "building" was done by BARNES so I cannot answer this part of the question. I CAN tell you that the two wooden chassis built ROARAFC boxes were the most used in MAN IS THA BASTARD "live" but DID use other more obscure boxes as well in our "live" sets. I recorded with BARNES for the UNSEEN NOISE DEATH/BASTARD NOISE first split 7" e.p. and I remember those oscillators really "taking me away" in my mind. One of the wooden ones can produce the "brown note" which means under the exact conditions, it can cause someone to lose their bowels !!!!!! This is the truth !!!! We had a great time recording our side of that 7" !!!

Zann: With the years the tone of the lyrics and themes of Bastard Noise, moved away from its radical political contents that used to be an essential part of Man is the Bastard, toward more esoteric and personal subjects. What was the reason for this decision?

Eric: Variety is the "spice of life" and I think it wasn't necessarily "premeditated but interests shift from time to time and so we just kind went with our instincts. The "political arena" is not going to be abandoned though. The new full length we are working on right now is going to devastate !!!

Zann: I think Man is the Bastard was one of the very few underground US bands that addressed the subject of the US government foreign politics, i.e the war in Iraq and Yugoslavia, etc. This practice was very unusual in the 90´s (as opposed to nowadays) what reaction did you get from your fans and people in general from this?

Eric: Our fans/supporters as I mentioned before just fucking rule so in general their reactions were amazing and consistently supportive. Luckily we do not "knucklehead" drinker fans, no loser jocks or evil dickheads are into us and that to us is PERFECT !!! We are definitely an all or nothing band when it comes to our supporters.
A special note : NELSON is out of BASTARD NOISE as of 7/17/2010 and we now have new member Aimee from the southern california grind band PROGERIA ! This is THE BEST line-up we have ever had. The future looks bright ahead !!!

Quiero decir vamos, escuchen "A CULTURE OF MONSTERS" – NO SUENA parecido a nadie en nuestras humildes opiniones.
